All our door systems* are certified through one or more UKAS accredited Third-Party Certification (TPC) scheme. Within each of these systems, one or more of our door products are contained.

Each TPC scheme has their own rules and requirements for membership. You can approach any certification provider with queries relating to their scheme rules and the methods to which they are applied. We would always recommend using a certification scheme that is accredited by UKAS and willing to communicate their certification in a transparent way.

DoPs (or Declarations of Performance) are available for a number of panel products (and other Construction Products for that matter), required for CE/UKCA Marking. 

These documents are to help ensure a level playing field for alike products by standardising the performance criteria and test/classification standards that the products must declare against. This enables purchasers of those products to make decisions based on their needs. 

Door blanks themselves do not have a harmonised standard to declare against, and therefore there is no option to provide a DoP for door blanks as a product. We can however provide various documents relating to the performance of each product/system we supply, including:-

• Extended Application Field Of Application Reports (EXAP)
• Classification Reports
• Scheme Certificates
• Technical Manuals
• Data Sheets

It is not always necessary to test doorsets from both directions. A more appropriate consideration is whether there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the doorset will provide adequate fire resistance, regardless of the direction from which a fire may occur.

The route to demonstrating this performance can vary depending on the type of evidence available, the certification body and the requirements of the responsible person or end user. However, there are well established principles within recognised standards and guidance documents that can be used to evidence performance in both orientations.

As Wood International Agency Limited, our focus that follows is on timber fire doorsets, although similar principles do apply to some other doorset constructions.

Regulatory Guidance

Approved Document B (England), Appendix C: Fire Doors, states:

“C3 – The requirement is for test exposure from each side of the doorset separately. The exception is lift doors, which are tested from the landing side only.”

At face value, this appears to require testing from both sides for all doorsets. However, this interpretation assumes that every doorset design is physically tested, which is not always the case in practice.

Role of Fire Testing Standards

Fire test evidence remains the foundation of certified and classified fire-resisting doorsets. However, test standards recognise that certain constructions - particularly timber doorsets - exhibit predictable behaviour under fire test conditions.

For example, Table 2 of test standard BS EN 1634-1 allows for this known predictability. Timber doorsets are typically tested opening towards the furnace as their performance characteristics can be reliably assessed without the need for testing in both directions.

That said, this approach is subject to specific conditions, including:

• The door leaf must be of symmetrical construction
• Any restraining/supporting hardware (e.g. hinges, closers, locks, latches) must demonstrate performance when exposed from both directions

Any non-symmetrical elements (such as some glass types) and restraining hardware must therefore be supported by relevant test evidence, not necessarily in the same doorset design as tested.

Demonstrating Dual Orientation Performance

Where a timber doorset has only been tested in one orientation, demonstrating performance from the opposite side typically involves some or all of:

• Testing the opposing orientation
• Providing supporting test evidence for any non-symmetrical components
• Ensuring all restraining hardware items have proven fire performance in the opposing direction

Importantly, this supporting evidence does not need to come from identical doorset designs. Engaging with an experienced assessment or classification specialist early in the process is strongly recommended to ensure all available evidence is effectively utilised.

Are Assessments Acceptable?

Yes—assessments are a recognised and compliant route to demonstrating fire performance.

Standards such as BS EN 1634-1 (Section 13: Field of Direct Application) explicitly allow for variations to tested designs, including:

• Changes in size
• Modifications to glazing
• Evaluation of performance in alternate orientations

Further extended application (assessment) standards, such as the BS EN 15269 series (including parts 3 and 20 for timber doors), provide additional routes for assessing variations. Other common routes include:

• Field of Application reports concluding to BS 476-22
• Certifire documents (TS10 door certificates are also assessments concluding to BS 476-22)

The Value of Third-Party Certification

Third-party certification provides an additional level of assurance. Tested and assessed Certified product designs can be subject to ongoing audit testing where any adverse results can be reviewed by assessment bodies to refine and update supporting documentation.

This process helps ensure that products placed on the market continue to meet the required fire performance standards, offering increased confidence to specifiers, installers and end users alike.

All our door products are timber based, so a lot of the requirements for storage, handling and processing are in keeping with that of other natural and engineered timber products. If you want finished goods manufactured from our product range to perform as expected, especially when it comes to fire doors and fires safety products, it is important that the materials used are treated appropriately.

Additionally, the evidence made available can often be used to support manufacturer's subscription to Third-Party Certification schemes, giving fire door manufacturers an opportunity to broaden the scope of products they offer over and above when they may have tested and certified independently. 

This makes Wood International Agency Limited the "System Provider" or "Systems House". Access to Wood International Agency Ltd evidence is subject to a two way agreement, often called a "Letter of Authority" or "Permission Letter". We can currently provide systems certified by BM Trada Q Mark,  IFCC and UKTC Ensure.

WIA Ltd supports this initiative by purchasing solid timber door cores from Indonesia (such as Therman and Flamebreak) that are covered by FLEGT regulations.

FLEGT helps to mitigate the chance of illegal timber entering the supply chain in countries that have implemented voluntary partnership agreements (VPAs) with the UK & Europe – currently only Indonesia has this agreement.

The Timber and Timber Products Placing on the Market Regulations (UKTR) and UK FLEGT Regulations apply in Great Britain from 1 January 2021 but the requirements remain the same as under EUTR.

Timber supply chains are regulated to ensure harvesting practices are legal, encourage sustainable harvesting practices and support global forest governance. Businesses trading in timber and timber products must take steps to ensure that they originate from legal sources.

Timber imported from countries that have implemented voluntary partnership agreements (VPAs) with the UK – currently only Indonesia – must be accompanied by a FLEGT licence.

So FLEGT is recognised on a national level to mitigate the chance of illegal timber entering the supply chain and support global forest governance, Wood International Agency supports this initiative to maintain our global forest industry and utilise only legally sourced timber products.

Third-Party Certification (TPC) is a non-mandatory, voluntary method for providing additional reassurance that their products or services perform as intended. 

Door manufacturers can subscribe to TPC schemes to demonstrate that their door products are manufactured in accordance with the scope they are certified against. We encourage our customers to join a certification scheme that suits their product rage to improve understanding, competency and product traceability. Wood International Agency Limited will assist our customers with their Third-Party Certification journey whether new-to-join, or a long time subscriber.

Full scale fire tests are currently conducted to one of 2 test standards, BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1. A "Test Certificate" doesn't really exist, although we have seen some documents titled as such, but these are usually in-house adaptations of one of the above documents.
